OPHELIA
The image of Shakespeare's intriguing character Ophelia has been a favourite subject among many artists past (particularly the Pre-Raphaelites) and present. She is a young woman, around 16 to 19 years old, in love with an older man who not only rejects her, but kills her father. As a result of losing both men in her life she goes mad. Here I have painted Ophelia pre-drowning in a very comptemplative state, without the insanity that grips her. It may be that in her last moments she calmly accepts her end. |
