RACE THE SUN
Painted after a trip to the Scottish Highlands (which I thoroughly recommend), where the mountains have been steadily eroded by thousands of years of wind and rain, snow and ice, to produce this beautifully smooth exposed rock surface. I have combined elements of Scottish and New Zealand geography and flora to produce this painting in which the cart is caught in what is perhaps the last of the sun's rays before the approaching storm. Whether the cart is heading for the castle or leaving is the viewer's choice.
Bear in mind that this painting was composed straight from the idea onto the painting surface without any reference apart from a quick overall compositional sketch. This is one of those times when I like the painting to dictate what it will become.
